“Honey Chicken Laid An Egg!” That was our scream of delight at the beautiful pale green egg we found in the nest box that day.

It was so exciting when our chickens began to lay eggs…every egg is such a treasure! Did you know that each chicken has their own song they sing after laying an egg? It doesn’t happen after every single egg they lay, and I’m using the word “song” very loosely here, because most of the time it actually sounds like someone is torturing your chicken, or they are literally going mad! There isn’t a definitive scientific reason for why the hens make so much racket after laying, but perhaps it is for the purpose of distracting any nearby predators so they won’t take notice of the egg. If the hen makes such a raucous as she walks away from the nest, all eyes will be on her. So maybe it’s a crazy distraction??? Regardless, it’s completely entertaining for us! (Probably not so much for the neighbors though…we like to bribe them with fresh eggs.)

Click on the sound clip under the picture above to hear Honey’s egg song…bonus…the wild backyard birds joined in too, so there’s lots of background chirping!
